CIS Names New Director



We are delighted to welcome Professor Glen Coulthard as the next Director of the Institute for Critical Indigenous Studies (CIS). A respected scholar, educator, and community leader, Professor Coulthard brings a wealth of experience, insight, and commitment to Indigenous scholarship, governance, and community engagement. His appointment marks an exciting new chapter for CIS, and we look forward to the leadership and vision he will bring to the role over the next three years (July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2028).

An Advisory Committee began the search for a new Director of the Institute for Critical Indigenous Studies (CIS) in the fall of 2024.  Sincere thanks go to all who took time to attend Professor Glen Coulthard’s presentation and to provide input for consideration by the Advisory Committee.

Professor Glen Coulthard is Yellowknives Dene and an Associate Professor jointly appointed in CIS and Political Science. He is the author of Red Skin, White Masks: Rejecting the Colonial Politics of Recognition (University of Minnesota Press, 2014), which has received several major awards, including the Caribbean Philosophical Association’s Frantz Fanon Award, the Canadian Political Science Association’s CB Macpherson Award for Best Book in Political Theory, and the Rik Davidson Studies in Political Economy Award. He is also a co-founder of the Dechinta Centre for Research and Learning, a decolonial, Indigenous land-based post-secondary program operating on his traditional territories in Denendeh (Northwest Territories).
