Dear CIS Community Members,
In 1992, the first Women’s Memorial March was held in response to the murder of a woman on Powell Street in the Downtown Eastside. CIS will be cancelling classes on Monday February 14th, 2022 in support of the 31st Annual February 14 Women’s Memorial March. Our annual class cancellation on February 14th is in support of the Women’s Memorial March and its significance to all of our community members.
There are many reasons our community members may attend the March, such as grief, support, commemoration of loved ones, and care for those who are hurt by the violence against our women, girls, and gender-diverse people. In support of our community members and the March’s values of compassion, community and care, CIS cancels our classes to give our students, faculty, and staff the option to recognize this day in a way that brings them peace.
We want to extend our concern and love for our community during this time and for those choosing to attend, we invite you to walk with us at the March. CIS staff will be meeting downtown at 12PM at Carnegie Hall, and walking in the March which begins at noon. Full event details can be found on our website (https://cis.arts.ubc.ca/ ), and on the March’s website (https://womensmemorialmarch.wordpress.com/ ) .
For community members who prefer a virtual platform, we invite you to an event with Glen Coulthard, who will speak on Indigenous feminisms and the Women’s Memorial March along with the histories and protocols of the annual February event. Our virtual event is from 9:30AM-10:30AM on February 14th at this link: https://ubc.zoom.us/j/61008066716?pwd=Zk1WUzRyTGpQeVdFOXVLNmdGWXdSUT09. We hope that all our community members spend this day in a way that feels right for them, be it attending the March, or spending some time caring for yourself. Below are our events, along with some learning and wellness resources that we would like share with you.
